Last week The Mail on Sunday revealed that Justice Secretary Jack Straw faced urgent questions about how Britain's most notorious police killer, Harry Roberts, was able to terrorise a family whose evidence blocked his release from jail. Roberts callously shot three policemen in 1966 and was sentenced to life in prison. James and Joan Cartwright, who gave Roberts work at their animal sanctuary for his day release, told how a series of brutal attacks on their animals coincided with a five-year campaign of intimidation.
